Sudden Funding for Downtown Streetcar Project?

Ted Houghton, the Texas Transportation Commission (TTC) chairman, told the El Paso Times today that he expects funding for the Downtown streetcar project to be approved this week. This comes more than a year after the City of El Paso completed its streetcar study the State said would be required to acquire funding.

The $97 million project could break ground as soon as August if the TTC approves funding. The project will construct trolley tracks from Downtown El Paso to the University of Texas at El Paso and back, mainly using Stanton and Oregon Streets.

Also up for a vote: funding for the final two ramps that will complete the Americas Interchange in East El Paso.

  1. So finally there is light at the end of the tunnel! El Paso state Rep Joe Pickett is against this streetcar funding for downtown El Paso! And with the exception of all the Naysayers! Everyone else from mayor Oscar Leeser, county Judge Veronica Escobar and congressman Beto O'Rourke and many more El Pasoans support the streetcar project.
