Developers Struggle to Bring 'Upscale' Retailers to El Paso

National brand name retailers and restaurants often overlook El Paso as a viable market due to multiple factors, according to local and national economists. Dynamics such as average household income that is lower than the national average and the absence of other 'upscale' brands in the Sun City play a part in why retailers do not commit. And it sometimes comes down to the border; retailers may not consider Juarez's 1.5 million residents as part of the consumer base.

El Paso Inc. takes a closer look and speaks with developers and retail consultants in a story this week, including the developer of the Fountains at Farah power/lifestyle center. Read the story at the El Paso Inc. website.

  1. So basically, we will never get upscale stores? We can't even get a cheesecake factory? What a shame, I thought El Paso was progressing.

    1. El Paso is progressing, the fact that these "upscale stores" don't see that is a whole different story.

  2. This is total bologne from these "upscale" retail and restaurant entities. So Ikea, for example, that sells cheap affordable furniture can't commit to building here? Is their affordable furniture too classy and sophisticated for El Paso? Save the B.S. about the Cheesecake Factory because Landry's Seafood House (which is expensive) has been here for a VERY long time and they do very well.
