The new international bridge at the Tornillo Port of Entry could have been up and running by the end of the year... but construction on the the Mexican portion hasn't even begun.
A six-lane bridge, tollbooths, and inspection facilities are nearly finished, all on the United States side. County Commissioners ok'ed an additional $52,000 for the project this week due to a miscalculation in the amount of embankment material needed.
The federal government has kicked in $93 million of the $133 million project cost. Mexican officials told the El Paso Times that they would start construction in the summer, which has come and gone. The official completion deadline is June 2014.
